Here's the first of several volumes that will dig deep into the sounds of black music heard all over Central and South Central L.A. from 1945-54. This CD draws exclusively from the vaults of Jake Porter's Combo records and showcases everything from cool cocktail blues to some uproarious R&B that doesn't stop that far short of being bonafide rock 'n roll. Household R&B names to be heard here include Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Chuck Higgins, Jack McVea, Gene Phillips, Ernie Fields, Smokey Hogg, Combo founder Jake Porter and others. Only a few of these tracks have ever been reissued by Ace before, and then only in the days of vinyl. 10 tracks or takes have never been issued at all.
