In the early 1950s, Stan Getz was fighting an uphill struggle with heroin and alcohol addiction. Unlike Charlie Parker and all too many other musicians from the same generation, Getz eventually beat his addiction. However, working with the saxophonist must have been a painful and arduous task. Guitarist Jimmy Raney, prominently featured on this CD, also suffered from Getz' occasionally erratic behavior. Volume IV of the complete sessions of Stan Getz opens with the better part of an extended live date recorded in Boston in Oct. 1951. Getz and his partner Jimmy Raney were in terrific form that night - in spite of any serious personal problems they may have had.
