One of the most important singers of the 20th Century, Nina Simone brought soul to whatever material she performed, whether it was jazz, blues, pop or R&B. Trained as a classical pianist at Julliard, Simone made her made her debut as a vocalist at an Atlantic City club after applying for a pianist position and being told she had the gig if she would also sing.
