Volume four of the recordings of Bud Powell presented in chronological order, opens with the tracks recorded live at "Massey Hall". The following September Bud Powell made a single session for Roost. On the ballads Powell's unstable character shows more than on the faster tunes. Powell's swift "Burt Covers Bud", devoted to photographer Burt Goldblatt, is the same tune as Coleman Hawkins' "Bean and the Boys". The dazzling runs on this one show that he was still able to produce thrilling music. A reluctant and insecure, yet touching "Moonlight in Vermont", is followed by a tribute to his wife "Buttercup" and leads to the disturbingly fascinating "It Never Entered My Mind".
