A duo of West African "vocalizing" flute masters lead a neo-traditional vocal and instrumental ensemble through a repertoire that bridges Africa and the New world. The hit song "Obama" epitomizes the spirit of the album in its integration of the ancient Mandeng custom of praise-songs into a much neglected function of American popular music, to be in the service of reverence. The album also incorporates a daring arrangement of chamber brass against mostly, but still very inventive and ebullient, African songs.
