Jazz giant Max Roach's association with Candid took place at the beginning of the 60's. Max found a sympathetic ear in Nat Hentoff - the New York critic and writer (and producer) for Candid Records. Hentoff commissioned the iconic “We Insist/Freedom Now Suite” featuring Max's soon to be wife Abbey Lincoln. “Freedom Day”, heard here also spotlights trumpet genius Booker Little, a musician with whom Max had really close links. Max, was of course the eminence grise behind Abbey's Candid album “Straight Ahead” with Booker and tenor sax colossus Coleman Hawkins. “Cliff Walk” by the Newport Rebels has Max playing alongside the legendary Jo Jones, while the 5th date in which Max was involved was The Jazz Life sessions organised by Hentoff to accompany his book of the same name.
