Side Effect, from Los Angeles, were the original jazz funk vocal group. Led by Augie Johnson and featuring the vocal talents of Louis Patton, Gregory Matta, and various female vocalist, they scorched a path through the late 70s soul scene. Album after album provided dance-floor hits, and they were cult favourites in the UK. Johnson would also be behind the great LA Boppers in the early 80s. Their masterpiece was 1976 release "What You Need". Produced by Wayne Henderson it features of Helen Baylor, whose voice soars over the album's string of hits.
