When Dexter Gordon played ballads he engaged the audience with his spoken introductions, the warm emotion of his tone and many song quotes. After returning to the U.S. in 1976 and playing to sell out crowds at the Village Vanguard, Gordon brought his working group to Montreal for four days in November 1977. Most of Dexter's ballad performances from this engagement are presented here, offering exciting and creative music recorded in the early hours of the morning - truly Night Ballads. Backing the legendary saxophonist was his top flight band - pianist George Cables, bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Eddie Gladden.
