Label owner Bob Thiele put together the fantastic "Head Start" double LP to showcase as much of his new label's output as possible. Over four sides we are given most of his earliest signings, a side-long history of jazz, a tribute to John Coltrane and a pioneering electronic music experiment with Jon Appleton. The track 'Avant Garde' is the only place you can get this track which feature spiritual jazz pioneer Horace Tapscott. 'Holiday For A Graveyard' by Ornette Coleman is also an exclusive to "Head Start", donated to Thiele by the saxophonist. The heartfelt 'Lament For John Coltrane' features Trane's drummer Elvin Jones.
We have reinstated a previously unreleased track, 'Flying Dutchman', dropped just before the album came out. The album didn't sell well when it came out and is now a collectors' item. This is the first time that it has been reissued.
