CD reissue of "Polyrhythm" which was originally released in 1976, the album features drummer Peter Magadini using polyrhythms on all 6 tracks from his famous books on the subject. Featuring a hot band with keyboardist George Duke (Frank Zappa Band), saxophones & flute by Don Menza (Buddy Rich Band), and electric bassist Dave Young (Oscar Peterson). Remastered in 2003. The compositions were chosen, not only for their rhythmic variation and adaptability to polyrhythmic interpretation but for their overall musical contribution as well. Listen to the polyrhythms, or just listen period. There are six tunes and six polyrhythmic themes. For example (Samba de Rollins) has a drum / tenor sax smoken' duet followed by an up tempo drum solo. The solo begins in 4/4 and as it developes the solo slips into half note triplets while the hi hat cymbal keeps the basic pulse going in 4/4. You can listen for these things happening throughout the CD or just listen, the CD stands on it's own. Track #1: ' Doin Time in 4+6 ' Features 6 over 4 (quarter note triplets) or 1&1/2 to 1. The drums are in both times at the same time throughout. Track #2: ' Five for Barbara' Listen for this 5/4 composition go into 4/4 as the drums then go into 5 over the 4/4 track #3: ' The Modulator' Metric modulations: Listen for three tempo 's going up and then three tempos modulating back down. (George Duke on the acustic piano is happening) track #4: ' Seventy Fourth Ave.' The band is in 7 the bass is in 4.(at the same time) track #5: ' Samba de Rollin's ' (Don Menza just of the Buddy Rich) band at his best and it is also his composition. The drum solo is in 3 over 4. track #6: ' Midnight Bolero ' A soulful waltz with 2 over 3 and 4 over 3 polyrhythms. •"Pete, I like the duet with you and Don Menza on 'Samba de Rollins' It's happening! - Steve Smith
