From the director of Belle du Jour and Los Olvidados: EL (This Strange Passion), the psychological study of a man obsessed. Francisco is a devout, wealthy and intense man of middle age. Seemingly the perfect specimen of gentility, Francisco is suddenly and "intuitively" drawn to a young woman he sees fleetingly in church. After romantically pursuing her and marrying her, however, Francisco's courtly passion fades and a paranoid obsession with her supposed infidelity takes over. Francisco subsequently alternates between wild fits of jealousy and repentance for his unfounded suspicions. His wife begins fearing for her life as Francisco's insanity surfaces.
His descent into madness is apparent as he enters his wife's bedroom one evening armed with a rope, a needle and some thread. As in other Buñuel films, beneath the calm and predictable world presented is the surreal logic of a dream-which then becomes a nightmare!
