Bing Crosby was king of the crooners until March 1942. On the 28th eighth of the month Tommy Dorsey’s young singer Frank Sinatra appeared in the American popular music charts with a record of the Cole Porter standard, Night And Day. The Bluebird disc only reached number sixteen, but it was enough to launch the solo career later in the year of “the greatest popular singer in recording history”. Frank Sinatra could be grateful to his British friends who gave him ten number one hits over a period of seven years. Many Sinatra enthusiasts were young girls, as you will hear from the extracts from his “Old Gold” radio broadcasts, One of which features Frank with Gene Kelly, singing, I begged Her, from their 1945 film, “Anchors Aweigh”.
