In 1943 Jimmy put words to bandleader Eric Winstone’s instrumental, Pony Express. After the War Jimmy moved to the United States where in 1947 he collaborated with Leslie Smith on On The Old Spanish Trail. In that same year Jimmy collaborated with the Russian-born composer, Mischa Spoliansky on Where Flamingoes Fly. Anne Shelton’s version was runner-up to the Ink Spots’ record in Britain. Jimmy wrote several songs with American composer, Nat Simon, including On The Painted Desert. Jimmy took a wrong turning at night near Portsmouth in 1937, and saw the name of a pub “The Harbour Lights” in his car headlamps, That inspired him to write a song with that title with Hugh Williams. It fared well in the American charts. It fared even better when it was revived in 1950, the No.1 spot going to Sammy Kaye And His Orchestra. 1951 brought another Kennedy-Simon song, Down The Trail Of Achin’ Hearts which Patti Page made all her own. For tax purposes Jimmy moved to Switzerland in 1960, but a few years later, when he heard of the tax benefits being offered to artists and writers in the Irish Republic, he decided to come home. Home became Thornbank House, Greystones in Co. Wicklow. In old age honours came thick and fast for Jimmy. In 1971 he was awarded the Ivor Novello Award for outstanding services to British music, by the Songwriters’ Guild, and the University of Ulster conferred on him an Honorary Doctorate of Letters, Jimmy Kennedy lived to the age of eighty-one, dying in Cheltenham on April 6th 1984, having received an O.B.E. the year before.
