Joe Meek will always be remembered as Britain’s first independent pop record producer, whose multi-million selling international No.1 hit record Telstar (which he also wrote) was the first record by a British pop band to make No.1 in the U.S.A., at Christmas 1962 - well over a year before the Beatles did so. Hailing from Newent in Gloucestershire, Joe had already engineered No.1 hits such as Frankie Vaughan’s Green Door, Anne Shelton’s Lay Down Your Arms and most of Lonnie Donegan’s skiffle hits in the mid to late-fifties before setting up his own independent label Triumph early in 1960, and then leasing his recordings, made in his homemade studio-cum-flat above a shop at No.304 Holloway Road in North London. He created “R.G.M. Sound” to deal with this - those being his real initials, Robert George Meek. This selection of recordings features Joe’s first work years as an independent record producer. On this CD there are more of his obscure recordings, many of which deserved to be hits too, and all of which in their original releases are very much sought-after collectors’ items today.
