In late December 1928 Tau Moe and his future wife Rose, members of a troupe of musicians and dancers under the management of Madame Claude Rivière left Honolulu bound for Asia. The following year they recorded 12 titles in Tokyo with Tau on steel guitar including songs from Tau’s native Samoa and also his adopted home of Hawaii. “Tau Moe Classic Recordings 1929-1949” brings together for the first time these 12 original and rare recordings. Tau and Rose went on to record again in Shanghai in 1934 and two of those sides are included in our compilation. Also featured in this first ever reissue devoted entirely to Tau and family are a further ten recordings Tau made in Bombay, Calcutta, Honolulu and London in the 1940s featuring Tau on electric Hawaiian steel guitar.
