He was born Annunzio Paolo,Mantovani in Venice on November 15th 1905. His father was the principal violinist at La Scala , Milan under Toscanini, and played also for Richter, Saint-Saens and Mascagni. Though he taught young Annunzio to play the violin, his father warned him off a career in music. It was in vain for Mantovani was playing professionally by the time he was sixteen. When the family moved to London, his father played at Covent Garden, while Mantovani Junior studied at Trinity College of Music. By 1925 his small orchestra at the Metropole Hotel boasted Reginald Kilbey and George Melachrino as sidemen. many composers, conductors and performers owe a lot nowadays to the gramophone, but few as much as Mantovani. Soon after World War II there was an increasing demand for his records in America. Something different was needed. The final selection was of an orchestra of forty-five musicians, thirty-two of whom comprised the string section Mantovani toured Europe, South Africa, Canada and Japan. The high record sales continued into the 1970s. Decca records were so pleased with their artist that the presented him with a diamond-studded baton in 1966, when he had been with them for a quarter of a century. By 1971 Mantovani had sold fifty million LPs in the U.S. alone. Eighteen of them were gold discs, having sold a million copies.
