This CD complements Ira Gershwin’s book, “ Lyrics On Several Occasions “ which he wrote in 1950 and dedicated to his wife , Leonie, whom he had married on September 14th 1926. He used his own name originally when he wrote the musical comedy, “ Be Yourself “ in 1924. After that he wrote the book and lyrics for most of George‘s music. Ira partnered with other composers, in particular Vernon Duke, whit whom he produced I CAN’T GET STARTED which Bunny Berigan, his trumpet and his Orchestra turned into a classic in 1938. After George’s untimely death on July 11th 1937 of a brain tumour, Ira collaborated with Jerome Kern on the songs for the movie, “ Cover Girl”, starring Gene Kelly and Rita Heyworth. Ira also collaborated with Harold Arlen in 1954 on the songs for the Judy Garland movie, “ A Star Is Norn”, including The Man That Got Away. Getting back to George and Ira ‘s partnership. Rarely have two collaborators worked together in such complete harmony as did George and Ira Gershwin. Each knew the other’s psychological and emotional pattern and was ready to conform to it.
