Tex hired twenty-two year old Glenn Douglas with a deep baritone voice, who joined the band on February 10th 1949. In an innovation, the band had already recorded the backing to the vocal of They Can’t Take That Away From Me twelve days earlier. Glenn Douglas’ first job was to dub the vocal. Glenn spent a successful period singing with the band, but in In the Spring of 1950, due to financial considerations and competition from other bands (Miller impersonaters), The Moonlight Serenaders had to go and with them went Glenn Douglas. He changed his name to Jay Johnson and in August 1950 he joined Stan Kenton for a year at the suggestion of Milt Bernhardt who knew Kenton needed a touring singer. One song which he made his own was The Day Isn’t Long Enough. Gene Rowland arranged it for him in 1950. The following year Ken Hanna handed in his score of The Day Isn’t Long Enough. Glenn Douglas, aka Jay Johnson, died in 1954
