The real Peruvian music from the back streets of Lima. "Jarana" is an improvised vocal competition between pairs of singers. This duel is similar in spirit to the piano "cutting contests" that characterised the rent parties of Harlem in the 1920s or even "rappers" in today's ghettos, a sort of "Latin doo wop with Spanish guitars." It evolved in the 19th and 20th centuries, and was practised by the urban poor, mainly black or of mixed race. The music on this album was recorded in 1958 by the four most famous "Jaranistas" of all time, Jarana's four aces, accompanied by guitars and percussion. The 20 page booklet contains essays and rare photos. |
