As a tribute to the late great radio presenter Alistair Cooke, this 16 track CD captures the urbane and relaxed broadcaster in a somewhat chaotic environment of a live jazz jam session. Here, Cooke acts as compere, often struggling to be heard above the sound of such legendary jazz men as Sidney Bechet, Bud Freeman, Tommy Dorsey, Jack Teagarden, Mezz Mezzrow, Harry James, Teddy Wilson and many more all performing in the presence of jazz legend WC Handy (there follows a blistering version of Handy’s "St Louis Blues" with Hot Lips Page). Here are 2 jam sessions, one chaotic from the St. Regis Hotel in 1938 and the other a more sedate affair with Cooke audibly in more control from the BBC Building on 57th Street in New York. |
